(Racing) Today, Fabio will be on his bike beside and within me, and like that all the way to Paris. He'll be with me in the month ahead. All my life, he'll be with me. (After teammate and roommate Fabio Casartelli died in the 1995 Tour de France)

The Revolution will NOT be Motorized!
You will not be able to super glide, mybrother.
You will not be able to gas up, burn out or cop out.
You will not be able to lose yourself on skag and skip,
Skip out for gas fueled beer runs,
Because the revolution will not be Motorized.

Dario Pegoretti at Interbike 2012:  Italian frame builder janked-over-extraordinaire.

Dario Pegoretti (born 1957) is an Italian framebuilder based in Caldonazzo, outside the town of Trento, in the Dolomites, about 62 miles northwest of Venice. The frames are impeccably constructed by Dario, a dedicated craftsman, yet painted and decorated by the irreverent sensibilities of a consummate artist.

One might hesitate to say it was a smack-down struggle for best of show . . .

Jacked in with an Omnium Race at the ADT Velodrome in Carson (CA) (Saturday Sept.22), the  Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association hosted a Fix Gear & Track Bike show.  There were about 20 entries.

CogJoint picked its own winner (click through the pictures above): entry no. 19 had the best stickers (where can I get some of those?).

Cinelli is to the deep mystique of Italian cycling tradition as Nitto is to the fetish of the Keirin anchored in Japanese culture and when you think of iconic cycling institutions Campagnolo instantly comes to mind and not far behind follows the rich styling of Cinelli who has successfully maintained a vibrant profile in the traditional circles of competitive cycling and has also found an enthusiastic market/audience in the fix-gear crowd.

Their presence is not overplayed by a hyper-corporate necessity.

This stuff Rocks Ass.

The most exciting product at InterBike had to be Giro’s new lace-up shoe collection with jack’d-out colors to suit every personality (disorder) and showcases the company’s emerging edgy, yet unpretentious, vision aligned with that devil-be-damned attitude twined in the culture of cycling  similar to the surf mind-set and kicks up the faith quotient in a corporate player.

The last picture in the set is Giro’s Soft Goods marketing manager Simon Fisher who talked up the product with great enthusiasm at the closing bell of the show.  When the lights dimmed to signal the day was complete, Simon kept us engaged with his excitement for all the new stuff Giro has planned.

The city of Long Beach officially supports Bike Corrals [parking spaces previously reserved for cars, functionally shifted for bicycles: a parking space for one car = 10 bicycles].

Acapulco Inn (AI) [2nd Street, Long Beach] jack’d out its own pony parking. They’z not be waiting for no stinking official in(vite)stallation. The AI is creating their own Bike Friendly Business District.

Ride over dher and have sum beerz.

The ProWalk/ProBike:ProPlace Convention (2012) [by Project for Public Spaces] was held in Long Beach, CA this year [Monday Sept 10 through Thurs Sept 13] and, for me, the highlights were the opportunity to attend the remarkable opening keynotes, at the Wednesday morning plenary, by Cycle-Chic celebrity Mikael Colville-Andersen [copenhagencyclechic.com & copenhagenize.com] and Phil Latz of Where to Bike, LLC, [bicyclingaustralia.com.au] and afterwards, in the breakout-sessions, I caught the presentations of Bikenomics and a Case for Bike Friendly Business Districts by Elly Blue [takingthelane.com] and April Economides [greenoctopus.net] making it a great couple of  days to meet a few people in the bicycle advocacy industry whose aspirations are inspiring and whose calls to action have unassailable direction of purpose and then it was all topped out with an introduction to the super energetic Clarence Eckerson Jr. of StreetFilms.org [love his stuff] who I met on the Promenade in Downtown Long Beach Thursday nite before the end of convention extravaganza at the super-groovy jacked-over Cycle-Chic Fashion show produced by Melissa Balmer, creator of  Women on Bikes Southern California.

Mikael Colville-Andersen’s keynote address is well covered by Carolyn Szczepanski [Communications Director @ League of American Bicyclists]: http://blog.bikeleague.org/blog/2012/09/mikael-colville-andersen-bicycle-culture-by-design

El Dorado Park has been a venue for Tuesday night racing {training} for over 30 years {founded in part by Pete Whitehead, Mark’s father}Bikeable Communities has recently taken on the task of promoting the yearly series [March through August and occasionally into September] and dedicated the last event for 2012 to the memory of Mark Whitehead.

The night was feverish with excitement at the prospect of racing in memory of Whitehead and winning jacked out straight up cash.

Mark Whitehead passed away in July 2011 at the age of 50. In the early years at El Dorado Mark was one of the notorious stars of the peloton and he lived to put the hurt to anyone and everyone. He was the consummate competitor.

Mark competed in the Men’s points race at the 1984 Summer Olympics and won ten National championship titles. [Wikipedia]

Tri-Pacific [TP] is a fairly new, high-end, small boutique Tri/Road Shop on the sleepy upscale island of Naples [Long Beach, CA].  When it first opened, the circle of “KNOW” talked about TP’s staying power; its future looks promising.  Leonard [the proprietor] appears to be developing an ardent cadre of followers; tri-characters, road evangelists, junior race enthusiasts, tek-gear-geek aficionados and people who simply love the finer qualities of all-things-bikes.  He’s also creating deep affiliations with the players in the industry, personal relationships with the local cognoscenti, and shows a quiet strength of leadership in sartorial ideals and convictions on and off the bike; he’s always dressed in a fine button down shirt and well fitted slacks.  His personal sense of style and his concern for quality are reflected in the character of the shop and the products you’ll find available.  In square footage the shop is tiny but jacked crammed with lots of high end gear, clothing, shoes, helmets, wetsuits, general accessories, bikes by Pinarello, Cervelo, Specialized and BMC.  At the back of the shop you find cool Jean Michel Frank style low back leather club chairs where you can sit comfortably and watch the traffic in the store amble around and have a conversation with the proprietor and anyone else who happens to wander over to enjoy a little bit of shop culture.

Stop in for a visit.  Engage Leonard in a casual conversation about cycling.  Ask him about his trip to the Tour de France [2012] when he drove in the BMC Team car and followed a few of the riders in the Individual Time Trail and went to some of the after parties.  He’s a gracious host; if he’s having an espresso he’ll be certain to offer you one too.
